Most think of economic innovation as having to do with increasing production and efficiency. In our particular approach, that is very limited. Increases in production have served their purpose and now innovation is about more than production numbers, its about a smarter economy. See one of our many new articles “Defining Economic Innovation.“
Garrett Fisher presented to the Rural Workforce Investment Board on April 16 in Dillon, CO. The subject was an update on findings from the initial scheduling of Startup Weekend Breckenridge, updates on its rescheduling, New Tech, and a developing thesis by the Institute regarding mountain region economic development. In summary, increasing tourism drives upward pressure on real estate prices which, in turn, makes it harder to provide adequate wages for local support jobs. Economic development that increases tourism or has real estate footprint is best to be avoided. Stay tuned for updates as an in-depth analysis will materialize in print in the near future.
A continuation of the work developed in “The Human Theory of Everything,” Garrett Fisher delivered a TEDx talk at TEDx NapaValley in Napa, CA on March 30, 2014. Well received by the audience of 400 listeners, the talk walked listeners through why discussions over our economy are stuck on basic theories and what must be done to create the next chapter in human accomplishment. A video will be posted of the talk within a few weeks.
Held at the Vail Leadership Institute, the Colorado Northwest Council of Governments’ bimonthly Working Group meeting was held on February 26 and Garrett Fisher presented updates on Startup Weekend Breckenridge and upcoming New Tech. He further presented on findings of economic trends in the mountain region with regard to innovation and startup activity. The group was highly supportive of the “location neutral” philosophy. His next presentation is at the Rural Workforce Investment Board on April 16 in Dillon, CO.
